Amze Emmons

Amze Emmons’ (Philadelphia, PA) prints explore disaster and refugee architecture, depicting these lonely, isolated spaces with a sweet and curiously cheerful color palate. A highly skilled printmaker, Emmons incorporates numerous media including etching, silkscreen, relief and stencil to create an odd juxtaposition of color, mood and cityscape which forces the viewer to question how the elements are representative of reality. Emmons states, “[our] nomad consciousness contributes to the sense of transience and dislocation. Our mass transit systems, airports and the patterns of refugee migration are artifacts of a larger narrative….”

Emmons received his BFA from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, OH, and his MFA from University of Iowa. His work has been shown in the US, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. He is in the collections of Ohio Wesleyan University; University of Iowa Print Archives; Bradley University, Peoria, IL; the Amity Art Foundation, Woodbridge, CT and theTama Museum of Art, Tokyo, Japan. Emmons is currently an Associate Professor at Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia. Emmons is also a co-founder and co-contributing editor of the popular art blog, Printeresting.org.
