Matthew Pruden (Philadelphia, PA) has created several bodies of work based on his fascination with early 20th Century history, literature and art as chroniclers of the human spirit. Working across many media, Pruden is concerned with cultural responses to the unknown, geographical imaginings, and the spectra of loss. He makes use of obscure histories as a kind of cultural subconscious, probing the ways that they inform our contemporary world.
Pruden received his BFA from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, in 1995. He has had exhibitions at Nexus Gallery, Philadelphia; The Philadelphia International Airport; Center for Emerging Visual Artists, Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania College of Art, Lancaster. Awards include the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in Painting.
