Howard Waxman (Philadelphia, PA) is a psychologist and a photographer. He holds a BA and MA in Psychology from the University of Maine and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College.
For the last twenty-five years, Howard has been photographing the Mummers at the Philadelphia Mummers Day Parade which happens annually on New Years Day. Using a 35mm camera Howard has developed a collection of intimate often transcendent portraits of a folk art tradition that spanned well over 100 years. His portraits show our individual essence as a timeless quality that can be seen through the complex masks we wear.
He has exhibited this work at the Mummers Museum (Philadelphia, PA), The Photo Review (Langhorne, PA), Indianapolis Arts Garden (Indianapolis, IN), HUB Gallery at Penn State University (University Park, PA), Milk & Honey (Philadelphia, PA), Mitchel Gold & Bob Williams (Philadelphia, PA) and the Calumet Gallery (Philadelphia, PA).
