Essay by Art T. Burton
The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America features Tarver’s compelling and often surprising contemporary images of African-American cowboys. His images convey the Black cowboy’s way of life and its rich heritage and affirm a thriving culture of Black-owned ranches and rodeo operations, parades, inner-city cowboys, retired cowhands, and Black cowgirls of all ages. Tarver questions long-held notions of what it means to be a cowboy and, with that, what it means to be an American.
The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America is the recipient of numerous awards, including Foreword's 2024 INDIES Silver Medal for Best Book of Photography; the 2025 Gold IPPY Award for Photography; the 2025 Next Generation Indie Book Award Winner for Best Book in the African American (Nonfiction) category and Best Cover Design, as well as finalist recognition in the Coffee Table and Photography category; and a place on the 2025 Lucie Photo Book Prize shortlist in the Single Artist/Publisher category.
