Ken Sutherland

Ken Sutherland (Chicago, IL) works in intaglio, creating delicate etchings with complex aquatint tones. Having trained as a scientist, Sutherland says, “I appreciate the technique of aquatint for its peculiar combination of precision and unpredictability. I often work from photographs, emphasizing, simplifying or altering elements to produce scenes that are recognizable, yet unfamiliar. In these pictures I have used the traditional technique to depict landscapes and contemporary urban spaces in Philadelphia and elsewhere.”
