Jenny Schmid

Jenny Schmid (Minneapolis, MN) creates prints through her own bikini press international.  Her work is densely packed with complex visual narratives. Schmid draws upon the rich print tradition of social satire and activism, notably inspired by Goya, Bruegel and Hogarth as well as the bold colors and densely packed compositions of advertisements and carnival posters, updated to respond to current social issues such as gender relations, the traps facing young girls, truth, liberty, apathy and philosophy. Curator Lisa Fischman said “Schmid’s images are rife with references, images, and ideas plucked and recombined from across the cultural spectrum. Among the myriad elements in her work, connections are suggestive rather than didactic, witty and wild, darkly comedic and politically charged.”

Schmid received her MFA from the University of Michigan. She is the recipient of a McKnight Fellowship and the Bush Artists Grant as well as a Fulbright which enabled her to study in Bratislava, Slovakia. She has exhibited her work internationally and has been published by Cannonball Press, White Wings Press, Egress Press and Slugfest Printmaking. Her prints can be found in a number of public and private collections including The Royal Museum of Fine Art, Antwerp; The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and The Detroit Institute of Arts. Schmid's work was shown at The Print Center in Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious.
